Vivian Dorsel is an unsung hero of education in Berkshire County, and we are proud to honor her with this year's Purple with Purpose award from the Williams Berkshire Regional Alumni Association.

Vivian was born in Pittsfield and graduated from Pittsfield High School and Berkshire Community College. She holds a BA in psychology (Magna Cum Laude) from Williams College, an MS in psychology from UMass/Amherst, and an MFA in writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts.

After working as Managing Editor of The Berkshire Review for eight years, she started her own annual literary journal, upstreet, in 2005. Vivian has dedicated countless hours to teaching writing at many local institutions, including Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Berkshire Community College,  The Norman Rockwell Museum,  The Jewish Federation of the Berkshires,  Public libraries in Pittsfield, MA and New Lebanon, NY, and Taconic High School, where she is a consultant to the student literary magazine, The Double Edged Sword.

About the Purple with Purpose Award:
Williams people make a difference in their communities every day, and their remarkable civic contributions merit recognition. As part of the College’s Purple with Purpose initiative, members of Williams Regional Associations worldwide annually nominate local Ephs who are making a substantial impact close to home, whether it’s in their personal or professional lives. Honorees are selected by a committee convened by the president of each regional association.
